At the movies, 3/4ths of a small popcorn (no butter) and lots of Diet Coke.

Afternoon snack

Being quite hungry after my very tiny lunch, I had about 1/4th of a portion of the penne pasta with mushrooms, spinach and goat cheese that my wife ate hardly any of at lunch yesterday.

Lunch

A very good but also rather tiny goat cheese salad with crouton on frisee salad and lemon thyme vinaigrette, and a can of Perrier.

A bowl of Nature's Path Spelt Flakes, and a café au lait, both with 1% milk, plus a spoonful of Lýsi.

Dinner

A Shish Taouk plate from Amir restaurant, sans pita bread, with a glass of red wine.

Breakfast

Back on the horse: A small bowl of Kashi GoLean Crunch with 1% milk and a spoonful of Lýsi.

A night on the town

Went out for dinner and drinks with my wife. We hit Otto at the W, then Go Go, Jello, and finally a post-concert gathering on St-Denis and Mont Royal. Not the best night for dieting, but lots of fun.

Appetizer: Yellow fin tuna tartar, guacamole, yuzu cilantro tabouleh. Very good!
Main course: Grilled hamachi with cherry tomato & lobster couscous, fresh hearts of palm and rosemary samorilla. Truly excellent!
Dessert: An awesome chocolate truffle with chocolate gelato and a caramel crunch.
Drinks: Dry vodka martini with a twist as an aperitif, Conundrum (Californian white wine) with the food.

After dinner, a few drinks, and I ended the night by having half a 12" all dressed thin and crispy crust pizza; unhealthy but necessary for the morning after...

Brunch

We had friends over, and my wife made a few recipes from a dieter's cookbook, all really good (and one a bit too good...). I had a small serving of a sweet potato frittata (an Italian open-faced omelet finished under the broiler) and a green salad with vinaigrette, one blueberry pancake with a serving of strawberries, pineapple and watermelon (no syrup), and a small slice of coffee cake. Had a café au lait (1% milk) to go with the food. About an hour later, I had a heaped teaspoon of organic Valencia peanut butter and a glass of Diet Coke to control some cravings for said coffee cake.

Breakfast

A spoonful of Lýsi, a small bowl of Kashi GoLean Crunch and a café au lait, both with 1% milk.

Friday, March 23, 2007

Dinner

9/14ths (yes, very carefully measured) of a 12" Domino's thin and crispy crust pizza, half all dressed, half Hawaiian. Domino's menus combined with Excel say it was about 830 kcal in total. This was accompanied with two glasses of a very nice Merlot.

Afternoon snack

A Nature Valley Sweet & Salty chewy nut bar, 150 kcal, and a can of Perrier.

Lunch

Spanish paella - saffron rice with shrimp, sausage and chicken, with a can of Diet Pepsi, and NOT accompanied by a very delicious looking muffin the caterer brought as a little extra. Slightly large portion, followed closely by a double espresso (no milk).

Breakfast

A small bowl of Kashi GoLean Crunch with 1% milk, and a spoonful of Lýsi.

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Dinner and a Movie

Dinner was a 1 1/2 egg, 1 1/2 egg-white omelet with skim mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and arugula, served with a green salad. At the movies I had a "medium" popcorn (similar to last week's "small" popcorn at a different theatre - about the same serving as microwave popcorn, I think) and some Diet Coke.

Afternoon snack

Café au lait, 1% milk.

Lunch

Smoked salmon sandwich on multigrain bread with lemon yogurt, tomatoes and scallion served with green salad, escorted down the hatch by Diet Pepsi.

Morning snack

Café au lait, 1% milk.

Breakfast

A café au lait and a bowl of oatmeal with flaxseed, four sprigs of redcurrants, and a bit of milk (all milk 1%).

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Dinner

Apricot shredded pork sandwich on whole wheat bun, and a green salad lightly dressed in lemon vinaigrette. Somewhat large portion size. Same thing as yesterday because this is a slow-cooker recipe which means my wife makes lots at a time. Plus it's totally awesome so I actually want it multiple nights in a row :)

Lunch

1/2 roasted grain-fed chicken with thyme and lemon served on roasted root vegetables and sauteed rapini, accompanied by a lovely blue can of Diet Pepsi, and followed by a lovely white mug of café au lait, 1% milk.

Evening snack

A KozyShack Butterscotch pudding (100 kcal), a can of Coke Zero, and a can of Diet Coke (for comparison, of course).

Dinner

Vegetarian chili on whole wheat pasta, topped with shaved parmigiano, two small boiled potatoes on the side. Portion was somewhere between fairly small and appropriate.

Morning snack

Café au lait, 1% milk.

Sunday, March 18, 2007

Evening snack

A bowl of popcorn ("Smart Pop" or something like that), 260 calories, and a can of Diet Coke.

Lunch addendum

Forgot:  About an hour before lunch, I had a small slice of banana and a teaspoon of organic peanut butter, much thanks to St-Hub's truly efficient delivery service.

Dinner, courtesy of my beautiful wife

A salad of mixed greens, shaved carrots, and strawberries, topped with walnuts and blue cheese, with very light dressing, with a boiled egg on the side, followed by a glass of red wine.

Lunch, courtesy of St. Hubert

About 4 spoonfuls of clear vegetable soup (a better label would be "salt soup with vegetables").

Chicken Caesar salad with mandarins. This turned out to have bits of bacon and come somewhat pre-dressed (apparently the folks at St-Hub have a need for combining the chicken and bacon bits with mayonnaise before putting it into the salad). Thankfully the rest of the dressing was in separate bags, two of them, a grand total of 720 calories that I did not have.

Oh, and a single french fry.

Accidental Morning Snack

My older son found a chocolate coconut pastry thing that had been
sitting on the desk since yesterday, and ate about half of it. In the
process of disposing of it I had a bite equivalent to perhaps a
teaspoonful. Not much but have to keep myself honest so it goes in
the food diary.

Breakfast

A small bowl of Kashi GoLite Crunch, and a cafe au lait, both with 1% milk.

Saturday, March 17, 2007

Dinner

A plate (but not too big) of Spaghetti Bolognese, followed by three
dates (the dried fruit variety).

Afternoon snack

Café au lait, 1% milk, and a single square of 85% chocolate (5g).

A Delicious Lunch at Holt Renfrew

Starter: A small green salad, dressed in a lemon vinaigrette, with
marinated slices of orange and small lentil beans.

Main course: Tartine with pork tenderloin, avocado, pineapple and
sprouts. Small serving. A Tartine is a long, thin slice of bread
(from some kind of baguette) that has been toasted.

Dessert: Three teaspoonfuls of a berry cheese torte - not like your
regular cheesecake, much lighter.

Drinks: A bowl of café au lait, and sparkling mineral water in a
really cool red bottle.

Breakfast

A small bowl of Kashi GoLean Crunch and a café au lait, both with 1% skim milk, and a spoon of Lýsi.

Friday, March 16, 2007

Dinner

Dinner was a Shish Taouk plate (sans pita, sans garlic sauce, with hummus) from Restaurant Amir, and a glass of red wine - Chateau le Puy 2002 (excellent!). Portion size was somewhat large.

Afternoon snack

Café au lait with 1% milk, and a single square of 70% chocolate (about 4.5 grams).

Lunch and some coffee

Basa filets (white fish) with a spicy lime powder crust served with broccoli and potato puree and roast peppers. Appropriate portion size.

After that, a café au lait, 1% milk.

If you're wondering about all these gourmet descriptions of my lunches, it's because we get really good catered lunches at work and I just copy the caterer's description. The portion sizes are generally good, rather on the small side even, most of the choices seem fairly healthy, and I usually go for the "healthy choice" that I asked him to highlight every day.

Breakfast

After 10 minutes on the elliptical (no longer feeling semi-sick, now only quasi-demi-sick), I had a small bowl of Kashi GoLean Crunch and 1/3rd of a banana.

Thursday, March 15, 2007

Dinner and a Movie

Dinner was sweet and sour meatballs (not the deep fried kind) with
fried rice and grilled vegetables. Somewhat large portion.

At the movies I had about 2/3rds of a small popcorn, and a diet soda pop.

Afternoon snack

Café au lait (1% milk) and a square of 70% chocolate (about 4.5 grams).

Lunch

Tuna salad sandwich with marinated cucumbers in a pita wrap served
with green salad, no dressing. Fairly small serving. Delicious.

Breakfast

Bowl of porridge with 1% milk, flaxseeds and redcurrants, small
portion. Also a spoon of Lýsi.

Later that morning, a café au lait with 1% milk.

Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Dinner and a snack

Dinner was a single delicious homemade beefburger with low-fat cheese on a whole wheat bun, with lots of veggies and a teaspoon of low-fat mayo, some mustard and ketchup. A bit later in the evening I had two juicy figs from Iran.

Lunch

Had a cafe au lait this morning, then had roast lamb in pita with cucumber and mint raita served with couscous salad. Portion size was appropriate. Removed the raw onions for my wife's olfactory pleasure :)

Breakfast

After 5 minutes on the elliptical (yeah yeah that's not much but
better than nothing, and I've had a bit of a cold for a while so...),
I had a bowl of Kashi GoLean Crunch. Portion was appropriate to
slightly largish.

Tuesday, March 13, 2007

Dinner

3/4ths of a 12" Subway Tuna sandwich on whole wheat, no cheese, mustard

Afternoon snack

Nature Valley Sweet'n'Salty, cafe au lait.

Lunch

Broiled salmon, lentil salad (may have been slightly buttery), some greens. Appropriate portion.

Breakfast

5 minutes on the elliptical, then had oatmeal with flax seed, apple slices, red currants, plus some lýsi. Portion size was appropriate.

Why?

Doctor's visit yesterday, big shock. Cholesterol is high, and blood pressure is high, and I'm 31 so that's not good. Not that it should be such a surprise since I more or less always have been very overweight. Therefore this food diary, an exercise regime, a positive outlook and dreaming of a future version of myself able to play volleyball topless and go to any store and buy any of the clothes because everything fits.
